Different Types of Wood Sheds

A shed is critical for personal needs, hobbies, and interests. As we progress through life our foot prints of activities need additional space for storage. Our sentimentality, memories, thriftiness, possibility of hand-me-downs, inheritance articles, and our creativity to recycle warrants the desire and need to invest in a shed constructed of wood.

The largest residential storage building which many of us use on a daily basis is our personal dwelling. The home stores many of the things which family members will utilize on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis.

The Garage:

The next largest storage area is the garage which leaves the vehicle parked at curbside. The car losing its shelter is not beneficial for its longevity. It is time for a storage shed.

Take an inventory of the stored items and determine the best shed type to solve the storage problems. Will there be a need for a garden shed, greenhouse, lean-to, workshop, playhouse, or a tool house?

A shed is worth the financial investment. A friend of mine had a double car garage in their backyard. This garage was used as a candle workshop, then it became a sewing workshop for costumes with a display room. On the last visit with these friends I noticed that the double car garage is being used for restoring vintage cars.

Shed Shapes:

The shape of the shed may be a simple square box, a rectangle, circle, or any other creative shape. It may be an open or closed structure. The exterior may be simple or duplicate the main house on the property. The function and décor of both the interior and the exterior of the building is determined by your imagination and personal requests.

Our hobbies and interests may require a structure which will serve as a production room and storage. One of my neighbors makes pottery as a hobby, but at a later date it became a business. The business was doing so well that he had an additional room built onto the garage and it became his work room and storage. One of the doors was placed on the garage wall which was also the workshop wall and it allowed him to move between the two rooms for moving supplies and loading pottery orders.

Advantages of Wood Construction:

The advantage of building a shed with wood is the ease in reducing, expanding, or remodeling to meet any changing demands. You may choose to design and draw the shed plans or hire an architect. It will depend on the complexity of the building. The construction may be done by self or hire a carpenter.
